The Arena Football League(AFL) is one of the most exciting sports in America. Though underrated, the AFL has generated fans across the country with high flying, high scoring games that bring excitement right to you. Well recognized celebrities have taken notice; as Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS own a team in Los Angeles called the LA KISS; Vince Neil of Motly Crue is now the owner of an expansion team in Las Vegas called the Las Vegas Outlaws. But one potential owner could give this league some publicity. The San Antonio Spurs are in negotiations with the AFL to take over the San Antonio Talons; who have been league owned since December after David Lynd had his ownership terminated. The Spurs are familiar with the Arena League; as they were the owners of the 1st team to call SA home; the San Antonio Force; who were a huge success with fans, as have the Talons. This would be a great thing not just for the Talons, but for the league in general; which has 2 other teams owned by NBA teams; the Cleveland Gladiators and the Portland Thunder. Talons coach Lee Johnson likes the idea of the Spurs possibly taking ownership of the team.
“It would be tremendous, I don’t think they would jump in and jump out; it would be long-term, and I think it would give us some stability”.
Other players say the Spurs owning the Talons would be great and it would give the Talons the stability that the franchise needs. It would also benefit the AFL as well. The league has made headlines a lot in the last year; a tv deal with ESPN, KISS owning an expansion franchise(LA KISS), Vince Neil owning the Las Vegas Outlaws; and now former CEO of Foxwoods Scott Bureta now taking over as AFL commissioner. But this would top all that and really give the league some attention.
From a public relations standpoint(and judging from the negotiations that continue to happen), the AFL really wants the Spurs as the Talons new owner. The Spurs are well known around the sports world as the face of basketball excellence. Winning five NBA championships in the last 17 years; including the 5th one this past June, they are the perfect example of what a great first class organization is. The Spurs are known for setting the bar, and in ways, changing the game; as they hired Becky Hammon as the first full time paid female assistant coach in NBA history back in July of 2014. Their reputation is well known by other sports organizations; as the Spurs own 3 other pro sports teams; the Stars of the WNBA, the Rampage of the AHL, and the Austin Toros of the NBAD-League. This would be great for the league, the Talons, and the city of San Antonio, which has been standing for and behind the Talons this entire process. It would be; in my opinion; if the Spurs purchase the Talons; the best thing that Peter Holt or his staff have done since Holt bought the Spurs in 1989.
