Steel Get First Victory Of Season; Defeats Tampa Bay 68-35

PORTLAND – The Moda Center in Portland Oregon exploded tonight as the final buzzer rang out and declared what all Portland Steel fans have been waiting for since the beginning of the 2016 season. Finally tonight the Portland Steel faced off the Tampa Bay Storm on their own turf for the first time since April. The team without a home made their city proud.

Since the beginning of the game Portland had the lead, within the first quarter the Steel had secured two touchdowns and both extra points. Though the crowd held their breath as that has been the Portland Steel’s calling card this season. Starting off with a hopeful few touchdowns and slowly losing their grip on the lead.

The second quarter held two touchdowns but only one extra point, the team’s defense worked hard, stopping the Storm dead in their tracks at the 2 yard line. Defensive End #99 Robert Hayes, matched up against the largest of Tampa Bay’s Offense, managed to shove off the Offensive player and take down the rushing Tampa , shoving them into the sidewall.

Seven minutes into the third quarter, Storm QuarterBack attempted a pass to Wide Receiver, failing as Steel player #9 Sergio Gilliam intercepted at the 10 yard line, running it across the field untouched to the 1 yard line.

Portland’s QuarterBack #10 Shane Austin, mixed in with amazing Wide Receivers helped in clinching tonight’s win. Shane raked in the Touchdowns tonight with Wide Receiver #5 Tyrone Goard, who seemed to be tonight’s dream team.

Rounding out the fourth quarter, Steel QB Shane landed the ball at the Storms front door, the 2 yard line. With 12.4 seconds left in the game Austin goes for the Touchdown himself, throwing his body into the endzone, extra point is good.

Tampa Bay put up quite the fight but ended up heading home with a 3568 loss, leaving them with one win so far this season when they faced off last week against the Arizona Rattlers (6356). Though the Portland Steel only have tonight’s win under their belt, the team is hyped up and confident after this game.

The Steel (18) take on Friday June 11th at the Talking Stick Resort Arena, home of the Arizona Rattlers (73).
