CLEVELAND – The Arena Football League’s Cleveland Gladiators, proudly presented by Unique Home Solutions, defeated the Baltimore Brigade in Week 11 at The Q on Friday by a final score of 59-48. With the win, Cleveland improved to 3-7 overall this season and currently sits alone in third place in the AFL standings.
Cleveland grabbed a 7-0 lead when QB Arvell Nelson connected with WR Quentin Sims from 39 yards out on the second play of the game and a one-yard Nelson rush shortly thereafter pushed the Gladiators’ edge to 14-0 before Baltimore QB Shane Carden supplied a four-yard scoring strike to Brigade FB Rory Nixon to make it 14-7 in the first quarter. Nelson responded by hooking up with Sims from 25 yards out moments later to make it 20-7 before Carden found a former Gladiator, WR Brandon Thompkins, in the end zone from 31 yards away to make it 20-14 Cleveland.
In the second quarter, a 19-yard Nelson-to-WR Tom Gilson scoring throw pushed the Glads’ lead to 27-14, but Baltimore’s Carden and WR Julien Talley combined for a six-yard touchdown to make it 27-22 Cleveland after a successful two-point conversion. Nelson found WR Michael Preston in the end zone from eight yards away moments later to push the home team’s advantage to 33-22, but Carden found Baltimore WR Paul Browning shortly thereafter from four yards out to make it 33-28. Cleveland’s Nelson capped the first half with a one-yard touchdown run, his second of the game, to take a 40-28 edge into the third quarter.
The Brigade started quickly in the second half courtesy of a 29-yard scoring strike from Carden to Talley to climb to within five points of Cleveland at 40-35, but Nelson and the Gladiators punched back with three straight touchdown passes, to Preston from nine yards out, Sims from 23 yards out, and OL/TE PhillipKeith Manley from eight yards out, to grab firm control at 59-35. Baltimore rallied with a nine-yard Carden touchdown toss to WR Reggie Gray to make it 59-42, but ultimately fell by a final score on 59-48, even after a Carden-to-Thompkins scoring throw from 40 yards away in the final quarter.
