2 min readNASHVILLE, Tenn. — The newest league for arena football officially launched, as team owners aim to establish a new identity and purpose.
Arena Football One made its announcement on social media Friday. The league so far is made up of eight remaining teams from the Arena Football League with the possibility of more teams added in the future.
Nashville Kats President Jeff Fisher, who served as interim commissioner of the AFL, will be commissioner of AF1. Former AFL general counsel and senior advisor of player operations Jerry Kurz was tapped as CEO of the new league.
Both Fisher and Kurz were moved to league front office roles during the AFL’s restructuring last season.
“I got both feet in this and I am 100% ready to go,” Fisher said in a press release. “This league has a great group of people who are going to make amazing things happen on and off the field.”
Orlando Predators Owner John Cheney said he’s excited about the change and the opportunity to build the brand.
“This gives our organization the opportunity to take control of our destines and deliver quality product on the field,” Cheney said in the release. “We are excited to grow the game of arena football in Orlando and internationally.”
The league noted there will be more announcements within the next few months, but so far its social media account on X is live.
